The single thing that makes or breaks a Santorini boat day is the wind. On calm days the catamaran cruises are unreal — flat water, easy swimming at Red and White Beach, the caldera glassy at sunset. When the meltemi (the strong summer north wind) picks up, the sea gets choppy and some tours get cancelled for safety. Check the wind verdict above before you book, and if it's a windy day, keep a land-based plan ready. If it's calm, it's a perfect day to be on the water.

When several cruise ships are in port, Oia and Fira fill up fast in the late afternoon and evening. If it's a busy cruise day, do Oia in the morning and save the evening for a quieter village. You can check which ships are in port on public trackers, and plan your Oia visit around them.
