Santorini has a reputation for being expensive, and it can be — but a lot of that cost is a choice, not a requirement. The island charges a premium for one thing above all: the caldera view. Step slightly away from it and the same holiday costs a fraction. Here's how to do Santorini well without the luxury price tag.
Where to stay — skip the caldera
This is the single biggest saving. A room with a caldera view in Oia or Imerovigli can cost €300–600 a night in summer. The exact same standard of room in Perissa, Kamari, Karterados or Megalochori costs €50–120. You give up the cliff-edge view — but you're out exploring all day anyway, and you can walk to the caldera for sunset for free. Staying on the beach side or inland is how budget travelers actually afford the island.
Getting around cheaply
The public KTEL bus connects Fira to all the main villages and beaches for around €2 a trip. It's the cheapest way to move around by far. If you want more freedom, an ATV at €30–40 a day split between two people is still cheap. Skip car rental and expensive private transfers unless you really need them.
Eating well for less
The rule is simple: the further you get from the caldera view, the better and cheaper the food. Eat in the villages — Pyrgos, Megalochori, Emporio — where a full meal of real Greek food costs a fraction of a caldera-view restaurant. Gyros and souvlaki from a local grill fill you up for a few euros. Bakeries do great cheap breakfasts and snacks. And a tip locals know: many tavernas serve better food to the people sitting where there's no view, because they're competing on the food, not the scenery.
Free things that are actually the best things
Some of the best experiences on Santorini cost nothing. The Fira to Oia caldera walk is free and one of the most beautiful hikes in Greece. Sunset from anywhere on the caldera — Fira, Imerovigli, Pyrgos — costs nothing and beats a €200 dinner reservation. Wandering Oia's back streets in the early morning is free and better than at any other time. The villages, the churches, the views — the island's beauty isn't behind a paywall.
When to come to save money
Timing is money here. July and August are the most expensive and most crowded. Come in late April, May, early June, late September or October and prices on rooms drop significantly, the island is calmer, and the weather is still excellent. September in particular gives you peak-season conditions at shoulder-season prices.
Where it's worth spending
Budget doesn't mean skipping everything. The one thing genuinely worth paying for is a boat tour — from around €70 it's the best-value experience on the island and shows you a side of Santorini you can't reach any other way. Spend on the experience, save on the room and the view-dinners.
The honest summary
Santorini is only as expensive as you let it be. The premium is almost entirely on the caldera view — the room with it, the dinner in front of it. Stay inland or beachside, eat in the villages, use the bus, come outside peak August, and spend your money on one great boat tour instead of one expensive view. You'll have a better trip than half the people paying triple.
