April is the month the island wakes up. I live and work here year round, and this is the stretch where you can feel it changing week by week — shutters coming off, terraces being repainted, the first real crowds still a month away.

It's one of my favourite times to recommend, but only if you come for the right reasons. April is not a beach holiday. The sea is cold. What you get instead is the island at a pace you'll never see in July.

The weather in April

Expect around 20–24°C during the day. Comfortable for walking, warm in the sun, and cool enough in the evening that you'll want a jacket.

The thing nobody warns you about is the wind. April gets windy days, and on the caldera it's stronger than it looks from a photo. It doesn't ruin anything — it just means a light jacket and not planning your whole day around a boat.

The sea is still cold. Some people swim. Most don't.

What's actually open

This is the part other guides skip, and it's the part that decides your trip.

Santorini opens gradually through April rather than all at once. Early in the month you'll find plenty closed — some hotels, plenty of restaurants, and most of the beach bars. By the end of April the island is largely running, with seasonal businesses opening as May approaches.

What this means in practice: book somewhere in Fira, Firostefani or Oia, where things stay open, rather than a quiet village where you may find nothing serving dinner. And if there's a specific restaurant you've set your heart on, message them before you come. A closed door in April is nobody's fault but it's a wasted evening.

Prices

April is one of the cheapest months to visit. It's the start of the season, so hotels haven't moved to summer rates yet and you'll find caldera-view rooms at a fraction of what the same room costs in August.

If your budget won't stretch to a caldera hotel in peak summer, April is when it will.

Getting here and moving around

Ferries run often from the other islands in April, so island-hopping works well. Flights are thinner than in summer but perfectly manageable.

On the island, a rented car or ATV is worth it in April — it's not hot, parking is easy for once, and the villages away from the caldera are genuinely pleasant to drive to.

Walk the Fira to Oia path

If you do one thing in April, do this.

The path runs along the caldera from Fira through Firostefani and Imerovigli and on towards Oia. Allow 3–5 hours depending on your pace and how often you stop, which will be often.

April is the best month for it. In July the same walk in that heat is genuinely unpleasant, and the path is busy. In April it's cool, quiet, and the views are the same.

Prepare properly: there are no shops along most of it. Take water, wear real shoes not sandals, charge your phone, and start in the morning.

It's free, and it's still the best thing on the island.

Explore the villages

April is the month to leave the caldera.

Pyrgos and Megalochori are traditional villages with narrow streets and proper Cycladic architecture, and in April you'll have them close to yourself. Akrotiri, the settlement preserved under volcanic ash, is one of the most interesting things on Santorini and it's indoors, which helps on a windy day.

An island tour makes sense in April because you can fit several of these into one day without the summer heat working against you.

A full-day guided loop of the island — Akrotiri, the Red Beach, a winery, the inland villages and a sunset stop. The best option if you have one or two days and don't want to drive or work out the buses.

Wine tasting

The volcanic soil and the Assyrtiko grape are why Santorini wine is taken seriously, and April is a good month to visit the wineries — the weather suits it and you're not depending on a beach day.

World-Class & Underrated Wine Tasting Tours From €65

Santorini's Assyrtiko is genuinely one of the best white wines in the world — grown in volcanic soil on vines trained into low baskets found nowhere else on earth. A wine tour takes you through the island's best wineries — Santo Wines, Estate Argyros, Venetsanos, Boutari — tasting as you go, usually finishing with a sunset glass over the caldera. Even non-wine-people leave impressed.

Oia without the crowds

Oia in April is the same village, minus the queue.

You can walk through it, stop where you want, and look at the caldera without a hundred people behind you. Sunset still draws a crowd, but nothing like the summer crush.

One thing to know: early April is quieter, and it fills noticeably as May gets closer. If you want the empty version, come early in the month.

Where to stay in April

Fira — the practical choice. Restaurants, shops, buses, and the most likely to be fully open in early April.

Firostefani — caldera views, quieter than central Fira, and right on the hiking path.

Imerovigli — the best views on the island and very calm in April.

Oia — if the scenery is the priority. In April you get it at a pace that's actually enjoyable.

Is April a good time to visit Santorini?

Yes — if you want to explore rather than swim.

You get the island before it reaches full season: warmer days, comfortable hiking, quiet villages, low prices, and Oia with space around you. Greek Easter falls in May in 2027, so April doesn't get that surge.

If your trip is about swimming and beach days, wait. If it's about walking the caldera, seeing the villages, drinking the wine and having the place breathe a little, April is one of the best months of the year.
