When is Ifestia 2026?
Saturday 19 September 2026, confirmed by the Municipality of Thira. The show takes place after dark, once the sunset has fully faded and the caldera is black — that's what makes the fireworks look the way they do.
The full programme, including exact timings, is announced by the municipality closer to the date. Plan to be in position well before nightfall rather than counting on a specific start time.
Watching From Land
Where to watch from land
One rule: you must be facing the caldera. The fireworks are over the volcano in the middle of the bay, so anywhere without a clear caldera view sees nothing at all. The best spots on land:
- The Fira walking path — the caldera-edge path through the capital, with the volcano straight ahead.
- Firostefani — the same view, a calmer crowd.
- Imerovigli — the highest point of the caldera, looking down on the whole show.
- Oia — further away, but a wide view of the entire bay lighting up.
If you'd rather watch from a restaurant, book a caldera-facing table well in advance. The good tables go early — and a bad table means you see nothing. Ask specifically for a table with a direct caldera view when you reserve.

The best way to see it: from the water
Everything on land is looking across at the volcano. A catamaran or boat tour puts you right underneath it. The fireworks go up directly overhead, the sound rolls off the crater, and for a few minutes everything around you — the water, the hull, the cliffs behind — turns red.
It's not a slightly better version of the land view; it's a different night. No crowds pressing at your back, no craning between heads, no dinner reservation to fight for. Practical tips for the night
Traffic builds fast
Roads into Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli get much busier than a normal evening.
Parking is extremely difficult
Don't plan on parking near the caldera. Leave the car further out or skip it.
Restrictions are possible
The municipality may apply temporary traffic restrictions around the busiest villages.
Arrive early, walk if you can
Get into position before dark and walk the last stretch — it's faster than sitting in traffic.
Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli get very busy on the night, and the roads into them fill up long before the show starts. Arrive early, walk where you can, and if you're on a boat, be at the port with time to spare.
